After more than two years living on Bunchgrass Farm, I have come to the conclusion that gardening here with God's blessed Walla Walla soil is always going to be a challenge and a learning opportunity. What started in my garden plot as a few tiny morning glory seeds has turned into this overgrown garden arch...
A tiny artichoke plant purchased in April has turned into this crazy artichoke-laden plant....
A volunteer pumpkin vine has decided to take over the garden fence...
Three small raspberry vines purchased in the summer of 2022, have become huge hedges that look like this. The runners from these vines have turned my berry patch into more than 15 vines.
My tomatoes need custom-made cages to support them or they will pull their cages down to the ground!
Before moving here three years ago, I was a frustrated gardener working with hard-pan soil, rocky soil, not much water and an overall hostile environment for gardening. Every success I'd had was small and hard-won because of the poor soil conditions. Upon moving to Walla Walla, I found myself shocked by how vigorous plants were, how many earthworms and ladybugs were in my garden, and how rich and fertile the soil was.
Now I am really learning how to garden (often with surprising results). Has anyone else had this experience?
